About Miami-Dade County Government

Executive Mayor

– On January 23, 2007, voters gave additional powers to the Mayor, who now oversees the daily operations of Miami-Dade County government.  The Mayor also has the power to appoint Department Directors and veto Board of County Commissioners action items. 

The Mayor is chosen in a non-partisan, countywide election.  The Mayor can only serve for two, four-year terms.    

Carlos Alvarez is the current Mayor of Miami-Dade County.


Board of County Commissioners

– The 13-member Board of County Commissioners is the governing body of Miami-Dade County government.  It sets policies and laws for the community through ordinances and resolutions.     

The Commissioners are chosen in non-partisan, single-district elections.  Commissioners serve staggered four-year terms, with elections every two years and no term limits.

The current County Commissioners are Bruno A. Barreiro, Chairman; Barbara J. Jordan, Vice Chairwoman; Barbara J. Jordan, District 1; Dorrin D. Rolle, District 2; Audrey M. Edmonson, District 3; Sally A. Heyman, District 4; Bruno A. Barreiro, District 5; Rebeca Sosa, District 6; Carlos A. Gimenez, District 7;
Katy Sorenson, District 8; Dennis C. Moss, District 9; Senator Javier D. Souto, District 10; Joe A. Martinez, District 11; José "Pepe" Diaz, District 12; and Natacha Seijas, District 13.


Miami-Dade

County Government

– Miami-Dade County government is comprised of 30,000 employees and 51 departments.  A number of County services are available online at www.miamidade.gov, through the 3-1-1 Answer Center and Team Metro Offices throughout the community.


Location

– Miami-Dade County is located along the southeast tip of the State of Florida.  It includes more than 2,000 square miles.


Municipalities (Cities)

– Miami-Dade County is made up of 35 municipalities (cities).  Some of the largest cities include Coral Gables, Hialeah, Miami, Miami Beach, Miami Gardens and North Miami.  Each municipality has its own government and city services. 


Population

– According the U.S. Census Bureau, Miami-Dade County has more than 2.4 million residents.
